New website: Seafood guide CY
SeafoodGuideCY is a science-based resource designed to support informed seafood choices by providing information on fish species commonly found in Cyprus, including their seasonality, origin, fishing methods, minimum legal sizes, conservation status, and potential health considerations.
By using the guide, consumers can discover new local species, identify high-quality seasonal seafood, avoid illegally caught or undersized fish, and better understand the environmental and social impacts of their purchases.
Ultimately, it allows consumers to buy seafood with greater confidence, knowing where their fish comes from and how their choices affect both their health and the future of our seas.
Each species is categorised using a simple system:
1. Recommended: Abundant, locally caught, low environmental impact, and healthy
2. Buy with caution: Some concerns related to stock status, fishing method, ecosystem impact, or health
3. Avoid: Overfished, high environmental impact, or high levels of contaminants
This guide is not intended to be a complete catalogue of all marine species found in Cyprus. Instead, it provides practical, science-based information on selected species commonly encountered in local waters and markets. The species included were chosen based on their ecological importance, local availability, conservation relevance, and significance to consumers and fisheries. Some species have not been included because they are not edible, are rarely observed or consumed locally, or because there is currently insufficient scientific or fisheries data available to support reliable recommendations.

The guide is an initiative under the SPOTLight on Sustainable Fisheries project, which is funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, and was officially launched in August 2025 as a step toward improving the sustainability, transparency and resilience of local fisheries.
Through this guide, we encourage consumers to look more carefully at the seafood they buy and eat, enabling them to make informed, responsible, and confident choices that benefit both people and the sea.
